Four-hour battery storage and bespoke power storage agreements help optimise your energy portfolio
Since 2009, Iqony has been pioneering the use of battery storage for the energy market in Germany. Now we are taking the next step towards long-term storage. Because if the energy transition is to be a success, energy storage is needed above all else, alongside the expansion of renewable energy sources. Only with these can electricity from wind and sun be made available even when the sun and wind are not available (dark doldrums) or when the amount of wind and solar energy is lower than demand.
The project
At the Duisburg-Walsum site, the Steady Green Energy project is creating an innovative battery storage facility with a capacity of around 50 megawatts (MW). This gives the four-hour storage facility a total capacity of 200 megawatt-hours (MWh). The storage facility makes it possible to better align the demands of electricity generation and consumption.
The Steag Iqony Group’s existing power station site in Duisburg-Walsum offers ideal conditions for this forward-looking project. In addition to the technical requirements and existing infrastructure, the site is located in the heart of the Ruhr region – precisely where there is high energy demand.
The Steag Iqony Group is independently carrying out the project development, planning and approval process for the Steady Green Energy project and will also be responsible for the construction, operation and marketing of the battery storage facility. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is being developed and supplied by Fluence Energy GmbH.
With the four-hour storage facility, the Steag Iqony Group is taking another important step towards making energy supply more flexible and further developing storage systems. In doing so, it is making a significant contribution to optimising the integration of renewable energies into the energy market. This is because the project is not only technically innovative: energy is marketed via Power Storage Agreements, i.e. the marketing of individual storage slices.
