Gundolf Schweppe to become the new CEO of the Steag Iqony Group in May 2026
Dr Andreas Reichel hands over after successful years at the helm
Essen, 11th December 2025 - The Steag Iqony Group is setting the course for the next phase of its development. Gundolf Schweppe (48) will take over the position of CEO on 1 May 2026. He succeeds Dr Andreas Reichel (64), who has decided to let his contract expire at the end of the current appointment period and then retire.
“In Gundolf Schweppe, we are gaining a proven industry expert who has played a key role in driving forward the decarbonisation of the energy supply and can shape the energy transition from a customer perspective. This makes him exactly the right person to consistently implement the Steag Iqony Group’s strategy, which focuses on Germany, flexible and low-carbon power generation and district heating,” says Philip Wack, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Steag Iqony Group. “I would like to thank Dr Andreas Reichel today for his outstanding commitment in extraordinarily challenging times. He has strategically developed the Steag Iqony Group, created stability and provided important impetus for the future.”
Michael Vassiliadis, Chairman of the IGBCE and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Essen-based energy company, also emphasises the importance of the planned transition: “We are delighted to have arranged a high-calibre successor. With Gundolf Schweppe, we are ensuring continuity and at the same time sending a clear signal for the next growth and transformation phase of the Steag Iqony Group.”
Over 20 years of experience in the energy sector
Gundolf Schweppe has been at home in the energy industry for almost 20 years. He is currently Executive Vice President Sales at Uniper SE and Chairman of the Management Board of Uniper Energy Sales GmbH. In this role, he is responsible for the commercial downstream business with industrial customers and municipal utilities. His portfolio includes the commodity business, long-term commercial power plant and flexibility contracts as well as the growing renewable energy business. He is thus actively shaping Uniper’s transformation towards customer-centred, sustainable energy solutions.
“The energy transition is one of the greatest industrial challenges of our time - and at the same time a great opportunity,” says Gundolf Schweppe. “The Steag Iqony Group is excellently positioned to consistently combine security of supply and decarbonisation. I look forward to working with the team to further sharpen the strategic focus, expand new partnerships and make the Group’s strengths even more effective in a changing market.”
Orderly transition with shared responsibility
Dr Andreas Reichel will continue to lead the Steag Iqony Group with unchanged commitment until the change in management and will remain associated with the company beyond that.
“Gundolf Schweppe is an excellent choice for the Steag Iqony Group,” says Dr Andreas Reichel. “I am very much looking forward to the continued challenging work in the coming months, to working with the entire team and to shaping the transition responsibly together with the management team. Our course remains clear: we are strengthening the future viability of the Steag Iqony Group - with a sense of proportion, high speed and a reliable contribution to a secure, climate-friendly energy supply.”
