Energy and emissions optimisation in the building materials industry
Cement and lime production offer significant potential for optimisation through continuously optimised process control, due to the enormous energy requirements involved in grinding and calcining the raw materials on the way to the finished product.
Additional economic potential arises from the substitution of primary fuels with alternative fuels and their optimised use. Furthermore, reliable and highly efficient flue gas denitrification is generally subject to strict regulatory requirements. PiT solutions based on model-predictive control, supported where necessary by imaging, reliably and sustainably realise this potential, thereby leading to lower specific emissions and energy consumption.
Cement industry
In the cement industry, optimization efforts primarily focus on four key process steps: (i) the grinding of raw materials and clinker, (ii) the burning process in the rotary kiln, (iii) the cooling process, and (iv) the efficient denitrification of flue gas using SNCR technology.
Each of these steps is demonstrably optimized by the PiT Navigator. Thanks to the underlying model-predictive approach, process changes and their effects—such as on product quality—are already known a priori (PiT Predictor). Additionally, control can be supported by the intelligent evaluation of supplementary thermography (PiT Indicator) as well as insights derived from flame pattern and intensity.
Lime industry
The calcination process is the central step in lime production and involves significant residence times. At the same time, this step—regardless of the type of kiln installed—is critical to product quality and specific energy consumption. This is where the PiT Navigator provides support through continuous process optimization.
The few available measurement parameters are utilized in a grey-box approach to achieve a reduction in specific energy consumption through model-predictive methods while ensuring consistent product quality. This allows the entire process to be precisely controlled and operated in an economically efficient manner.
